Pitch Lake, Trinidad – World’s Largest Natural Asphalt Lake

Today we are going to talk about the “World’s Largest Natural Asphalt Lake”.

Among different kind of lakes around the world, this is kind of a different lake. This lake is called “Pitch Lake”. The Pitch Lake is located in southwest Trinidad in the village of La Brea.

The Pitch Lake is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world.

According to the history, The lake was created thousands of years ago by the process of subduction, when the Caribbean continental plate was forced under another plate.

The lake is approximately 250 feet deep, with a surface area of 100 acres.

Pitch Lake is a tourist attraction that attracts about 20,000 visitors annually.

The lake is estimated to contain reserves of around 6 million tons, which would last 400 years at the current rate of extraction.

Apart from being a natural wonder, the lake has great social and economic value to residents of La Brea in particular and citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
