La Rinconada: Highest city in the world

At a height of 16,700 feet above sea level, La Rinconada in Peru is the highest populated city in the world.

With a population of 50,000 people, The town is located in the Ananea District, San Antonio de Putina Province.

In La Rinconada  the weather remains freezing throughout the year with common snowfalls. It has wet/rainy ‘summers’ and dry winters.

The average annual temperature is 1.2 °C and the average annual rainfall is 707 mm.

It is a mining area. the city is located near a gold mine.

All men in this work in the mines. La Rinconada’s economy is mainly based on the production of gold.

Most of them work under a unique system called cachorreo system. Under this system they work for 30 days without pay, and on the thirty-first they are allowed to take as much ore as they can carry on their weary shoulders. But when they take ore, they don’t know whether the ore contains any gold or not. There is no way to tell.  It’s a matter of luck.

Actually this place is really worth visiting once in life time.
