The Italian government is giving away 103 historic buildings across the country, including houses, villas, towers, and ancient castles for free.
According to the country’s State Property Agency, whoever gets a free property, needs to turn the property into some kind of tourist attraction. That’s the condition. They will have the freedom to turn their new property into anything they want, a hotel, villa, shop, spa, restaurant, or anything else.
“The project will promote and support the development of the slow tourism sector,” Roberto Reggi from the State Property Agency told ‘The Local’.
“The goal is for private and public buildings which are no longer used to be transformed into facilities for pilgrims, hikers, tourists, and cyclists,” Roberto added.
According to the official announcement, Entrepreneurs and businesses that are mainly made up of people under the age of 40 will be eligible for this.
If you’re ready to own a castle, submit a proposal to the State Property Agency. The deadline for applications is June 26. Successful applicants will get a 9 year contract to renovate the properties. If they prove successful, the contract can then be extended another 9 years.
If you miss the deadline, there are plans to add another 200 buildings to the list in the next few years.
